The filmmakers behind British independent comedy feature film, Pulp, are excited to have had such a positive response to the trailer on the biggest weekend of the film calendar. Producer and co-director, Adam Hamdy, believes the tactic to issue an exclusive scene through YouTube will help Pulp secure the right kind of distribution deal.
He said, Worldwide, the clip rapidly became the number one video on YouTube in the Film and Animation category. It was the second most watched video in any category in the United States on Saturday. In certain US regions, such as Salt Lake City, it was the most watched YouTube video over the weekend. Comedies are tricky to market at the best of times. In todays climate the majority of distributors are unwilling to take risks on films that do not feature established stars. Releasing Pulps exclusive Star Wars scene online is one tactic we have used to help distributors feel comfortable that the film has widespread appeal.
Every once in a while a low budget commercial comedy comes along that does not rely on the presence of stars. Films such as Clerks, Dazed and Confused, or Super Troopers have tapped a nerve and engaged global audiences. Our experiences of releasing the Star Wars clip and screening Pulp in its entirety suggest that it could be one of these rare films. Audiences find it funny and entertaining, and leave the film feeling better for having watched it.
Matt Hubbard, co-producer of Pulp, said, Making an independent film is tough. Ensuring it gets the right sort of distribution can be even harder. Every aspect of making Pulp has been innovative, so we are taking a contemporary route to distribution. Were building awareness of the film online first, by releasing an exclusive scene with the trailer. The scene features some pretty foul language and even fouler views on Star Wars. We knew this tactic would stimulate a reaction and hoped it would become an online hit.
In the ten days since releasing the Star Wars clip weve had press coverage in the UK, United States, Brazil, Germany, Iceland, and picked up fans as far away as New Zealand. So far, innovation seems to be working.
Independently financed, Pulp The Movie was recently nominated for the London Comedy Film Festival Discovery Award. Set in the world of comic book publishing, the film is proving to be a hit with audiences. Phil Bland, producer of Pulp said, We recently screened Pulp The Movie to an audience of 1,200 people at the annual SFX Weekender and the reaction to the film was brilliant. Hearing an audience clap and cheer at key moments in the film made all the hard work worthwhile.
